OMSCHRIJVING KUNSTWERK:
Junya Sato is a Japanese artist based in Amsterdam.
In this exhibition, which centers around the theme of Shame, he is showcasing his new work, “Tiny Resistance.”
The painting is based on family photos taken in his childhood and explores his resistance to feelings of embarrassment.
Back then, he felt so uncomfortable being photographed that he deliberately made funny faces to hide his true feelings of awkwardness.
Nowadays, people often present the best version of themselves through social media, but Sato’s photo explores the opposite.
Both are conscious of “how we are perceived,” and Sato’s work shows how this discomfort creates a mask for the self-consciousness.
This work highlights the connection between our self-consciousness and feelings of shame.
